As of the 1st of September 2014, I was appointed the new Home School Community Liaison Coordinator in Mary Queen of Angels. I am looking forward to working with great people within the school and the wider Ballyfermot community. The aim of the Home School Community Liaison Scheme is to promote partnership and cooperation between home, school and the community to make sure that each child participates fully in the school system.

The H.S.C.L Scheme recognises parents as the primary educators of their children. In my role I support parents in assisting them in their role as parents and educators. The way in which I offer this support is by informing parents of the educational supports that are available in the school and the community. In our Parents’ Room, parents have the opportunity to join a wide variety of courses, courses that are for recreational purposes such as Cooking, Flower Arranging, Arts & Crafts and Yoga & Meditation and educational courses such as the ‘Parenting Plus Programme’, First Aid, Irish, Maths and Literacy programmes.

Over the years parents have participated in classroom activities such as ‘Reading for Fun’, ‘ Maths for Fun’ and baking classes with their children. Parents also participate in Art days throughout the school year in the classroom. The children really enjoy having their parents in their classroom.During the week I’m fortunate to go on home visits. This is a lovely way to meet parents. I always feel welcomed on my door to door visits. Many of my ideas are inspired by parents. This year a fundraising committee was set up following an idea a few parents had. This has already been a huge success and we recently raised enough money to buy a much needed defibrillator for the school. This could not have been achieved without the help of the parents.

A breakfast club and after school club take place daily in the school also. The breakfast club first began with the help from parents who sacrificed that extra hour in bed to come and volunteer in the club. The club is a real success and a great place for the boys to come and have a chat and a bite to eat before the school day begins.I work closely with the H.S.C.L co-ordinators from all the schools in the Dublin 10 area.

In 2008  a local committee was formed which is made up of ourselves. S.C.P,parents and other agencies from the area. At the start of each academic year we come together to brainstorm topics to concentrate on during the year. We have had many successful projects in the past few years like ‘One Book, One Ballyfermot’ literacy project and the very successful ‘Word Millionaire’ project which ran this year.

My office is located upstairs in between school 1 & 2 and my door is always open. My phone number is 0860308574. The Parents Room is also open daily and you are welcome to drop in for a coffee anytime.
