School History
Mary Queen of Angels was built in 1960. The school began in Johnston House, Le Fanu Road, where three rooms were made available by the De La Salle Brothers. This was due to the fact that the De La Salle and Dominican schools were full to capacity. Three teachers took the first group of pupils at 9.00 a.m. Three other teachers took a second group from 12.15 p.m. The number of children attending the school was much higher than today with a number of 1,299 pupils at its peak in both schools.
Mary Queen of Angels (2) took in its first pupils in 1962. It began as a junior school with the 336 pupils - 99 pupils in 1st class and 237 pupils in 2nd class. There were only 7 teachers including the principal. This meant that there would have been an average of 56 children in one classroom. The pupil number rose to 661 pupils in 1966 and remained high for most of the 60’s and 70’s.
